Professor Wayne McIlwraith is widely recognised as one of the world’s foremost authorities in Equine joint health and osteoarthritis. With over four decades of groundbreaking research and clinical practice at Colorado State University, Professor McIlwraith has transformed how we understand and treat joint disease across species.
Appointed Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) in the 2025 New Year Honours for his distinguished contributions to veterinary medicine and the equine industry, and recipient of the American Association of Equine Practitioners’ Research Award for his life-long contributions to equine research in orthopaedics, joint disease and biologic therapies, he is a University Distinguished Professor at Colorado State University, founder of the Orthopaedic Research Center, and namesake of the C. Wayne McIlwraith Translational Medicine Institute. His work has transformed orthopaedics across both veterinary and human medicine.
His contributions to the field include:
- Pioneering arthroscopic surgery techniques that revolutionised orthopaedics
- Founding the CSU Orthopaedic Research Center, now one of the world’s leading research facilities
- Having an entire institute named in his honour – the C. Wayne McIlwraith Translational Medicine Institute
- Bridging veterinary and human medicine through translational research that benefits both animals and people
- Receiving lifetime achievement awards from the American Veterinary Medical Association, American College of Veterinary Surgeons, and being appointed Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit
- Authoring over 400 publications and five textbooks on joint health and orthopaedics
